I think the duck on the cover is David because when i looked at it I thought it meant maybe "A fish out of water" because maybe he wants to go in the water but he can't because he can float. I also think it might mean everyone is speacial in there own way. Because maybe he can't swim like anyone else BUT he can float! I don't think Catheren Understands that. I think that Catheren is the fish because she is looking at her brother who is the duck and she wishes he would come down and be like her.

I agree with you because i think that the cover is in Catherine's perspective because in the book she thinks of him as somebody who is different and she wishes that he is like a normal brother. Because she thinks thinks of him as different the author would make the cover as a fish in the water(catherine would be the fish) and a duck(david is the duck) representing her thoughts about him.

I think you are correct that David is the duck but my resoning is different, I think it is because David can't reach other people the way most people can and since it is a social disability ( autism ) it supports my answer since the other fish is seperated from the duck. This will impact him since he has no one else caring for him other than his family since he can't REACH OUT.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Sarah that the duck floating represents that David is special in his own way, because he can't sink, but he CAN float. I also think that the cover is in Catherine's point of view because she wishes David would just sink, like everybody else.
ReplyDeleteWow Everyone,
ReplyDeleteReally great insight! What amazing ideas about the cover of the book! Really thoughtful and well supported and connects to David's relationship with the world and how he sees himself and how other people see/interact with him.
I think that both Sarah and Andre have very interesting points of view although on different sides of the coin. One is how David reacts to everyone and what impact it has on his family. What kind of scarfices do you think his family will need to make in order to protect him for the outside world?
On the otherhand what do you think it would be like to be the fish out of the water. To be different from everyone else and trying to make it through a world that expects everyone to act and behave one certain way. Do you think David understands that people expect him to do different things?
Great start on the discussion, Everyone!

I think I agree with Andre because his point is really powerful, so is the yours, but his comment makes me think more about why David is seperated from everyone else and why he might be the duck.
ReplyDeleteI think that David might also be the fish because he can only live in one world that with his family. That would be like living in the water and out of the water would be David living without support from his family meanwhile a duck if you think about it can live in both worlds (water and land)and the fact he is looking up at the duck makes me realize he might be looking up at Catherine (duck). Right now I don't think we can say which character the animals on the cover represent it might be someone we don't expect.
ReplyDeleteI can agree with everyone in some way.:):):):):):):):) Callia
ReplyDeleteHi peeps
ReplyDeleteI think that we all agree that the cover can go two different ways right ? So i thinnk that we should try to find evidence in the book to find out if the duck or the fish is david.
Sarah V
I agree,
ReplyDeletebut it might also be switched around because I think the fish is the one saying "RULES" (which is usualy Catherine saying rules to David).
